Q: How did you come up with the idea to write the House Of Night Series?
In 2005 my agent, Meredith Bernstein, and I were at a writers' conference and she said she had an idea for a new series she'd like me to write set at a vampire finishing school. I'd been teaching high school for several years, so I immediately thought YA. Then I decided to make my vampyres matriarchal and have much of their Change based on biology, and the House of Night was born!
What many people don't know is that I've documented much of my influence for the world of House of Night. In 2011 we released Nyx in the House of Night. In Nyx in the House of Night some of your favorite YA authors, plus a few experts, help you navigate the influences behind the House of Night series.
If you want to indulge in more House of Night material, I recommend the House of Night Legacy graphic novel. Now you can see Zoey Redbird's challenge to figure out a whole new social hierarchy, affinities for elemental magic, and physiological changes that make her crave blood! Watch while Zoey and her group of devoted friends turn to The Fledgling Handbook 101. As Zoey and her friends attempt to survive the House of Night, you can also turn to YOUR Fledgling Handbook 101 and follow along. Inside you’ll find original stories, the complete vampyre history, additional info into rituals, vamp biology, the Change, and much more.
